House Bill 4 - Change US System of Weights & Measures
Pro
Con
Measurements will be easier to calculate
It will be difficult to get the entire country to adapt to the metric system
Metric system is based on a decimal system that is easier to remember than the U.S. customary system
It would cost a lot of money for the schools to buy new math textbooks because the current textbooks will be inaccurate
If we use the metric system, it will be easier to trade with other countries
Also would cost money for everybody to convert to metric measuring cups and tape measurers
More than 95% other countries use the metric system (U.S., Liberia, Burma/Myanmar)
We are already in major debt, and since changing to the metric system would be expensive, it would just add to that. For example, we would need money to convert all speed limit signs.
We will make money through the trade possibilities we will get
This could lead to agism if the younger generations understand the metric system better than older generations.
Our scientists and engineers have already converted to metric
All US car manufacturers will need to make the primary unit to measure speed kph rather than mph. This could be very expensive.
The conversion will be a time span of 5-10 years so there will enough money to switch
It would be hard to adjust because we are used to the U.S. system, not the metric system
Easier to teach in schools because of the more simplistic way the numbers are set up
All students and adults who have already began education would have to forget everything they knew and learn new things
Easier for international business.
Parents who do not know the new system would not be able to help their children in school work
Easier to convert because the system is based on 10’s rather than 12’s Ex: 1000 meters = 1 kilometer 5280 feet = 1 Mile Easier to convert to kelvins by celcius than fahrenheit.
Car speedometers are in miles, police scanners are in miles per hour. Therefore, it would have to be adapted to properly measure speed.
In 1999, The Mars Climate Orbiter was exploded due to the fact that the measurements for the altitude pressure were incorrectly converted to the metric system. This was a $125,000 loss
Elderly people may have trouble adjusting to the change, as older brains have more trouble learning new things. Also, as a whole, they are very “set-in-their-ways”
All internal government documents are required to be made in the metric system already.
The metric system is the international form of measurement. Quicker and easier to communicate between other countries.
